Great is Thy Faithfulness

Hymns are wonderful. A well-written hymn can really pierce the soul with truths from scripture. Recently I have been actively trying to THINK about hymn lyrics as I sing them. Surely I should be thinking about everything I sing, but I think particularly with densely-packed wordy hymns, a lot of the depth can be missed. So I've been trying to consider them afresh each time I sing them. We sang the hymn Great Is Thy Faithfulness recently at church, and I was struck by how true and wonderful this hymn is. God is faithful. God is consistent. God is strong. God is hope. God is GOOD. And though I know all this, I often need to be reminded, because how easily I can 'forget' as I walk through the hustle and bustle of days and weeks and months. God is faithful. And that is enough.

Great is Thy faithfulness, oh God my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not;
As Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be.

Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided;
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
to Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided;
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided;
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
